Abstract
Lung cancer is among the most common and deadly cancers worldwide and accounts for a substantial proportion of cancer-related mortality, including deaths attributable to suicide. Beyond severe physical complications, lung cancer is associated with profound psychological consequences that can significantly impair quality of life. Emerging evidence suggests that inflammatory processes and tumor-associated immune signaling, particularly cytokines released within the lung tumor microenvironment, may influence central nervous system function through neuroimmune and neuroendocrine pathways. We hypothesize that lung cancer-associated secreted molecules, including pro-inflammatory cytokines and tumor-derived signaling factors, contribute to increased suicidality by promoting neuroinflammation and disrupting stress- and mood-related neural circuits. Integrating epidemiological evidence with underlying biological mechanisms may improve understanding of suicide risk in patients with lung cancer and facilitate the identification of innovative biomarkers. Such biomarkers could support early risk assessment, while targeted preventive strategies addressing inflammatory and psychological pathways may ultimately help reduce suicide risk and improve outcomes in this vulnerable population and enhance patient-centered clinical care.
